DUBLIN DART services are back to normal this morning after a day long disruption yesterday, due to the derailment of an empty passenger train. An estimated 75,000 to 80,000 commuters were affected.

The passenger train, en route to Dundalk, was derailed near the East Wall, Fairview, at 4.45 a.m., but was quickly removed. However, the track had been seriously damaged and engineers spent most of the day repairing it.

Throughout the morning trains from the North and the DART travelled only as far as Killester, where passengers were taken by bus to the city centre. At 11.45 a.m. a single rail line became available and trains began to travel as far as Connolly Station again. Delays, though, were considerable.

Services were back to normal by 8.45 p.m. last night, when both rail lines were operational once more.
