Davis withdraws from Tory leadership race

British Conservative party leadership candidate Mr David Davis today withdrew from the race for the job.

Mr Davis said he would be supporting Mr Iain Duncan Smith.

Mr Davis told a media conference at Westminster that after taking soundings from parliamentary colleagues last night, "it is clear we cannot close the gap with the next contender."

He said he believed Mr Duncan Smith was "the candidate most likely to carry forward the agenda that we have set out".
