A man who died more than 10 days ago remains unburied because of an investigation into his death.
Edward Dempsey from Moneyquid in Killeigh, Co Offaly, formerly of Strahard in Mountmelick, died in hospital on October 11th, nearly 10 months after he was assaulted.
He was hit on the head and was treated in several hospitals until he died at Midlands Regional Hospital in Portlaoise.
Mr Dempsey was attacked near his home in what was thought to be a dispute over land and farm management issues. Two men were charged with the assault in September and a file has been prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Gardaí are awaiting the results of a postmortem before deciding whether or not to upgrade the case. However, the results are not expected for another fortnight.
Supt Philip Lyons at Portlaoise Garda station confirmed Mr Dempsey's body is being held in the morgue at Portlaoise. His funeral was planned for Sunday, October 15th, but was cancelled the day of the removal on the 14th. Supt Lyons says he expects Mr Dempsey's remains will not be buried until the end of this week.
