TRIBUTES HAVE been paid to Prof Gerry O’Sullivan, a consultant surgeon and founder of the Cork Cancer Research Centre, who died yesterday.

Mercy University Hospital chief executive Sandra Daly said Prof O’Sullivan had received many national and international acknowledgements and awards in recognition of his enormous contribution to surgery and research.

He graduated from UCC in 1969, and trained in Ireland and the US before returning to Cork as consultant surgeon in Mercy University Hospital in 1985.

He founded the Cork Cancer Research Centre in 1999 and was president of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and the European Surgical Association.

Ms Daly extended the sympathy of hospital staff to Prof O’Sullivan’s wife Breda, daughter Orla and sons Gearóid and Eoghan.
