Gardaí investigating the death of a 14-year-old girl in Cavan town confirmed this afternoon she did not die following an assault or attack.

The body of Jamie Maughan was found on July 2nd behind a vacant house in Harmony Heights estate, less than half a mile from where she had lived.

The teenager had been missing from her home in the Ard na Gréine estate for five days.

Supt Joe Sullivan, who is leading the investigation into her death, from Cavan Garda Station told ireland.comtoday that preliminary toxicology reports showed "she did not die a violent death."

"We are treating this as a case of suspicious death, as we have since the beginning, and we are still interviewing potential witnesses," he said.

The preliminary toxicology and pathology reports from the Assistant State Pathologist, Dr Margaret Bolster, are not being released for operational reasons. Supt Sullivan said he could not comment on when the final reports would be released.
