Indonesian prosecutors have asked a court to impose the death penalty on the Bali bombing suspect accused of having overall responsibility for the attack that killed 202 people last October.
Mukhlas, alias Mr Ali Gufron, is one of three brothers among more than 30 suspects in the case. His younger sibling Amrozi has already been sentenced to death for his role in the attacks; another is also separately on trial.
Mukhlas, a 43-year-old Muslim preacher, has been charged with plotting, organising and carrying out terror crimes. He has retracted earlier statements given to police, saying they were made under duress.
Prosecutors had earlier said Mukhlas met al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in 1987 in Afghanistan, and targeted the holiday island of Bali because it was popular with "white people." Most of the victims of the blasts were foreign tourists.
Authorities have blamed the attacks on the al-Qaeda-linked Southeast Asia militant network Jemaah Islamiah. They say Mukhlas was one of its top leaders.
Prosecutors have said he supplied at least $30,500 to various suspects to buy explosive materials and a mini-van that was later turned into a massive car bomb.
