The death toll on the State's roads rose to 218 at the weekend. This compares to a figure of 195 killed in the same period in last year.

Along with the death at Stepaside in Co Dublin, gardaí were last night investigating a fatal accident in which a pedestrian was hit by a car in Nenagh, Co Tipperary.

The incident occurred just before 9 a.m. at Grallagh, Dolla, yesterday.

Ms Mary Hurley, a single woman in her late 70s, suffered fatal injuries on the road outside her home at Grallagh.

She was crossing the road to wait for a lift to Mass when the accident occurred at 8.50 a.m. yesterday.

Ms Hurley was rushed by ambulance to Nenagh hospital, where she was pronounced dead at around 10 a.m.

Gardaí at Mullingar, Co Westmeath are investigating a single-vehicle fatal road traffic accident which occurred at Dalystown, on the Mullingar to Kilbeggan road, at 6.30 on Friday evening.

They named the victim as 24-year-old Mr James Fanning, of Beechlawns, Mullingar, Co Westmeath.

Mr Fanning died at the scene, and was removed to Mullingar hospital for a post-mortem.

A male front-seat passenger was injured and taken to the Midland Regional Hospital at Tullamore, Co Offaly, where his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Earlier on Friday, a Ms Maureen Whelan (73) was fatally injured when she was struck by a truck in Ranelagh, Dublin.

A man also died in the North yesterday after he was struck by a car.

A man in his 30s was killed in an incident in Co Tyrone in the early hours, on the Doorish road in Omagh.

Mr Patrick Joseph McBride (31), of Loughrey Terrace, Drumquin, Co Tyrone, died instantly at the scene after being struck by the car at approximately 3 a.m yesterday.

The PSNI yesterday confirmed to The Irish Times that two women and a man were subsequently arrested in relation to the incident.

They were later released, and a report is being prepared for the North's Public Prosecution Service.

It was confirmed that no one else was injured in the incident, and only the one car was involved.

The PSNI is appealing for information from anyone who may have witnessed the incident.
