A businessman convicted of defaming a woman competitor by advertising her on an Internet porn site as a prostitute has agreed to pay "substantial" compensation to his victim.
Earlier, Francis Kenny (40), Knock Road, Ballyhaunis, was convicted at Castlebar Circuit Court sitting in Westport of "malicious publication of a defamatory libel, knowing the same to be false". Mrs Maureen Walker was contacted by more than 100 men looking for a prostitute as a result of the advertisement.
In Westport yesterday, Judge Carroll Moran, who had criticised an original £10,000 compensation offer from Kenny, said he was satisfied that the offer had been substantially increased.
He remanded Kenny on continuing bail until Friday next.
