Demand for electricity in Ireland rose by 4.48 per cent last year, according to the State-owned company with responsibility for the national grid system.
In its annual report for 2006, Eirgrid said a record peak demand of 5,035 megawatts (MW) was recorded last December.
It also noted that renewable electricity generation increased to over 9 per cent wind generated electricity reaching 750MW, in addition to the approximately 250MW of hydro-electric power and generation from landfill gas.
The report shows the Eirgrid had revenues of €139 million, which gave rise to a statutory profit of €12.6 million, giving an underlying profit of €3 million.
Eirgrid chief executive Mr Dermot Byrne said: "During the year, we took over the role of Independent Transmission System Operator and Market Operator in a seamless way.
"We are working with commitment on further challenges, including setting up the Single Electricity Market, building new interconnectors and working to achieve increased renewable energy and energy efficiency," Mr Byrne said.
