Democratic presidential contender Senator John Edwards, has pledged his support for the Good Friday agreement in a statement timed to woo Irish-American voter support in next week's Super Tuesday primaries.

Senator Edwards, who is challenging Senator John Kerry for the Democratic presidential nomination, said in his statement that Ireland was one of America's most critical allies in Europe, and as the current president of the European Union, Ireland had an historic opportunity to help set the direction for Europe for years to come.

"I will work hard to support a strong US-Ireland relationship, and look forward to making an official visit to Ireland," Senator Edwards said in the statement released by his campaign headquarters.
