Several hundred demonstrators protesting against a European economic summit confronted Austrian riot police in Salzburg today and some stones were thrown, eyewitnesses said.
Reports indicated that several hundred protesters, some of them hooded and dressed in black, had approached a police barricade leading to the conference centre, where the World Economic Forum (WEF) was beginning a summit of politicians and business leaders.
Some of the demonstrators hit police shields with flagpoles.
The WEF runs from Sunday to Tuesday.
