Minister for Communications Noel Dempsey today appointed the board of the Digital Hub Development Agency.

The Digital Hub is a Government project to create an international centre of excellence based on digital media enterprises.

Joyce O'Connor will chair the board. The new board members are Michael Kelly of the Higher Education Authority, Ruth McPartlan of Fluidrock and Helen Keelen of Sirikit.

IDA chief executive Sean Dorgan and Jackie Harrison of Ibec were reappointed, while former school principal Attracta McMullin and chartered accountant Jack Fagan remain on the board.

Mr Dempsey said: "To date it [the Digital Hub] has succeeded in attracting over 50 digital media companies, employing more than 400 people."

The €250 million Digital Hub project based in the the Liberties area of south inner-city Dublin was announced by the Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and then US president Bill Clinton in 1999.

However, the project is behind schedule and has been the subject of controversy, notably the closure of Media Lab Europe and the bursting of the so-called Internet bubble.

In 2001, the Department of Finance cut the Digital Hub's budget.
