Apoel Nicosia 2 - 1 Derry City
Despite claiming an important away goal, Derry City were defeated by a superior Apoel Nicosia side in Cyprus last night, in the first leg of the first qualifying round of the UEFA Cup.
The home side opened the scoring in the 21st minute with a strike from Wojciech Kowlczyk. The Candystripes mustered a reply two minutes before halftime, with Gary Beckett providing the crucial strike.
The initiative swung the way of the Cypriots again in the second half, with a Stelios Okkarides strike on 54 minutes which proved enough for victory.
