Bruton deplores home help cuts

Minister for Health Mary Harney has cut the budgets of agencies that provide home help services on Dublin's northside by 20 per cent, Fine Gael's Richard Bruton said yesterday.

"This decision was taken on the last day of the Dáil before it went on its summer break. This will have a devastating effect on some of the most vulnerable people being cared for in the community. This cut has been implemented without warning, and it tears up service agreements that had been negotiated and put in place from the beginning of the year.

"Minister Harney has no justification for trying to claw back money from the most vulnerable people in order to pay for her Department's incompetence in the administration of nursing home charges. To do this at a time when the Minister cannot be brought to account for the decision in the Dáil adds insult to injury."

The deputy leader of Fine Gael said that special programmes for those with autism and quadriplegia would be directly hit.

"The service will now have to make some extremely difficult choices, such as letting 23 staff go, or cutting back to a three-day week. How can this be justified?" he added.
