A group of Travellers who forced the closure of a school in Co Derry left the site today.

The Travellers had occupied Sperrin Integrated College in Magherafelt since Saturday evening, confining themselves to a car park.

The authorities in the school, which educates children from the Catholic and Protestant communities, decided to close it today.

School principal Alistair Rowan said he was delighted the situation had now been resolved.

Mr Rowan said the group of Travellers, which numbered around 20 people in five caravans, had been civil. He said no money had changed hands to persuade them to leave.
