Detention of UK 'bomb plot' suspects extended

British detectives investigating the alleged airliner bomb plot have been granted further time to question 23 suspects.

British detectives investigating the alleged airliner bomb plot have been granted further time to question 23 suspects.

The police can detain 21 people until August 23rd, and two others until August 21st, a spokesman said.

One person arrested on Wednesday remains in custody in the Thames Valley area.

News of the warrants of further detention came after anti-terror detectives applied in closed-court hearings for more time to question 23 of the 24 suspects in custody over the alleged plot to blow up transatlantic passenger jets with liquid-based explosives smuggled in hand luggage.

In each case, officers were presenting evidence to a district judge for him to decide whether it was sufficient to warrant further detention.

The complexity of the case means if detectives are successful, they are likely to seek a series of further extensions - taking them close to the maximum 28 days - before deciding whether to charge or release the suspects.

The 24th person was only arrested on Tuesday in the Thames Valley area and the custody time limit in their case is running to a different schedule.
