London - Princess Diana's mother has spoken for the first time about the year of grief which has followed her daughter's death.
Speaking on a US TV documentary to be screened today, Mrs Frances Shand Kydd described the "enormous fear" she felt as she attempted to deal with her pain. But she drew strength from the thousands of mourners gathered outside Diana's Kensington Palace home, mingling unrecognised amid the crowds on the nights leading up to the funeral.
The world-wide mourning would have staggered Diana herself, she said. "The public worldwide were Diana's strength. Far to little's been said about what people gave her," she said.
Mrs Shand Kydd ended filming when interviewer Cathy Crier asked if there was animosity between her and Dodi's father, Mr Mohamed Al Fayed, the Harrod's owner who publicly branded her a snob and bad mother.
"You've just finished," was her only reply.
