Dissident republicans were blamed for a gun attack on a police station Derry  city today.

Civilian vehicles, including one owned by a doctor outside a surgery,  were also hit when a gunman with a tartan scarf wrapped round his face sprayed the PSNI base at Strand Road with automatic fire. Nobody was hurt.

Around 30 spent bullet cases were found in the street.

A car which police believe was used in the shooting was later found burnt out in the city's Brandywell area.

It was the first attack mounted for some time in Northern Ireland by dissidents opposed to republican involvement in the peace process.

Chief Inspector Brian Hume said: "It was an indiscriminate and reckless attack."
