An Bord Pleanala has approved planning permission for a controversial suspension bridge across the Liffey in the Docklands area. The authority turned down an appeal by residents against the project, Dublin Central TD Mr Tony Gregory said last night.

The bridge, designed by Dr Santiago Calatrava, an internationally-renowned architect, will link Macken Street with Guild Street.

The local East Wall Community Association has expressed disappointment at the ruling. A spokesman said that the bridge would dramatically increase pollution in the Docklands area.
