Work is to resume by the weekend on a £30 million Galway docklands development, following approval yesterday by An Bord Pleanala. The controversial development is one of the biggest undertaken in the city.
It stopped 11 weeks ago when the developers, O'Malley Construction Ltd, gave an undertaking to the High Court to withdraw more than 100 workers from the Long Walk site, pending the decision of the appeals board.
An Bord Pleanala turned down an appeal by Blarebrook Ltd and others. The development has been consistently opposed by environmental and residential groups, which claimed the developers had failed to meet conditions laid down by Galway Corporation.
The appeals board ruled that the proposed development would not seriously injure the amenities of the area, but that the corporation's conditions would have to be observed.
