Docklands protest over foul smells

Locals in Dublin's docklands are to go ahead with a protest over foul smells in the area today. This is even though the Docklands Development Authority has said it has stopped works which gave rise to the smells.

The development authority which is overseeing the remedial work on the former Dublin Gas Company site at Misery Hill says "really awful" smells arose after two tar tanks were removed from the ground in recent weeks.

However, it insists tests carried out under the terms of its licence from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) showed the odours "came nowhere near the levels where they could cause damage to the health of local communities in Pearse Square or Charlotte Quay".

Today's protest, which takes place at noon, follows calls for health screening for locals. Mr Daithi Doolan, a member of the local consultative council, said residents had complained of many different effects and it was important that these complaints were documented.
