A meeting of the International Society of Doctors for the Environment will take place in Dublin on December 13th. The organisation represents over 540,000 doctors in more than 100 countries worldwide. Speakers will address the environment and health, genetically engineered food and microwave hazards, according to organiser Dr Elizabeth Cullen from Mountcharles, Co Donegal.
The society was formed in 1990 to co-ordinate information to the public, the authorities and medical colleagues "on the consequences of environmental degradation on human health and to propose solutions on how to avoid any further damage".
"Air, water, land and food contamination, both intentional and unintentional, legal and illegal, is an ever-increasing threat to the health, if not the survival of the biosphere," said Dr Cullen.
Membership is open to all health professionals, including veterinary surgeons. The meeting will be held at IMO House, 10 Fitzwilliam Place, Dublin, at 2 p.m.
