Donegal's 13th weekly newspaper is launched this morning. The Donegal News on Monday is part of the Omagh-based North West of Ireland Printing and Publishing Company (NWIPPC).
Its sister paper, the Donegal News, which sells on a Friday, has been on the shelves for the past 103 years.
Speaking ahead of the launch, editor Columba Gill said that, as the principal paper in a fast-growing town like Letterkenny, it was felt a weekly no longer provided for the needs of the area.
"There was too much happening from our final deadline to the following week and the only way to fill that gap was to take out another paper.
"Monday was selected not only because there is no other local paper that day but because it is ideal for providing comprehensive sports coverage from the weekend. With the onset of local radio, we found that while people are tuned in for the results, they also want follow-up written reports and photographs - and when better than when everything is fresh in the mind.
"This will free up extra space in our Friday edition for more in-depth features and previews of the coming weekend attractions," he said.
"Extra colour pages will also allow us extend our photographic coverage of the region's thriving social scene and develop areas like fashion and lifestyle. The paper is noted for its strong news coverage and we intend to build on that with up-to-the-minute reports of the breaking stories from the weekend," Mr Gill added.
The paper is an integral part of the Omagh-based NWIPPC which now has six titles - the Fermanagh Herald, the Ulster Herald, the Tyrone Herald, the Strabane Chronicle, the Donegal News and Donegal News on Monday. The company employs almost 100 people across four sites in Donegal, Tyrone and Fermanagh and has a combined weekly circulation of almost 50,000.
