A large Irish owned wind energy power station was officially opened yesterday in Gweedore, Co Donegal. The three megawatt facility, producing enough electricity to power 3,000 households, will feed into the national ESB grid under a long term purchase contract.
The elevated location of the wind farm at Cronalaght has been identified as one of the best in Europe based on wind speed analysis. It has been developed by Gineadoiri Gaoithe Teo and is the first wholly owned Irish wind farm developed under the Government's recently announced alternative energy initiative.
The opening was performed by Mr Peter O'Neill of the Department of Transport, Energy and Communications, on behalf of the Minister of State, Mr Emmet Stagg.
