A Moldovan youth, who was arrested yesterday morning for trespassing, has been remanded in custody while a Garda inquiry into his identity and status in the State is carried out.

The Dublin Children's Court heard that the youth, an unaccompanied minor, is believed to be aged 16.

He had been arrested early yesterday for trespassing with intent to commit an offence at a house in Clondalkin.

He had claimed that he had registered his presence in the State.

He had also claimed that, because of the fact of him being an unaccompanied minor, a social worker had been appointed to his case and that he had previously lived in a hostel in Galway.

However, Judge John O'Neill heard that there was an objection to bail on the grounds that the authorities were not satisfied with the details the youth gave relating to his identity.

The Garda National Immigration Bureau did not have a record of anyone under the name.

Judge O'Neill remanded the youth in custody to St Patrick's Institution until Friday.
