Nairobi - At least 56 people have been killed in a mining disaster in northern Tanzania after flash floods caused pits to collapse, writes David Orr.

Names of the dead and missing have been compiled from a list of those known to have entered the mine. But as any number of miners could have gone underground to work illegally, say the regional authorities, the death toll could be even higher. State radio has announced that 21 people were rescued after the accident at Mbuguni, near the northern farming town of Arusha, on Thursday evening. There is now believed to be little hope of finding survivors trapped underground.
