At least 69 people have been killed in the Bolivian capital La Paz after the most powerful storms ever recorded over the city.

Bulldozers have cleared mud from the streets and rescue workers have pulled more bodies from swollen rivers.

The storm flattened homes and cut electricity under a torrent of rain and hail that quickly flooded the capital, which sits at the lowest point of a natural bowl surrounded by the Andes mountains.

Mayor Juan del Granado said 150 people were injured and that 122 families who had lost their homes were being sheltered at the city's main football stadium.

Many of the dead were street vendors who ran into underpasses where they drowned in flash floods.

Bolivian President Mr Jorge Quiroga declared a state of emergency in La Paz and appealed for foreign aid.

The National Meteorological Service said the city has not had such intense rainfall in the 50 years since records began.
