Criminal charges will not be brought for the killing of two robbers by armed detectives during a foiled raid on a north Co Dublin post office las year, it has emerged.
At an inquest hearing into the death of Colm Griffin and Eric Hopkins Dublin City Coroner's Court heard the Director of Public Prosecutions had this week taken the decision not to proceed with charges.
The two dead men were part of a five-man gang who were attempting to hold up Lusk Post Office on May 26th. Armed detectives had been lying in wait for them.
Mr Griffin (33) of Canon Lillis Avenue in Dublin's north inner city died from gunshot injuries to the head and body.
Mr Hopkins (24) of Lower Rutland Street, also in the north inner city, died of gunshot wounds to the body.
Coroner Dr Brian Farrell adjourned the hearing until June 13th.
Both families of the dead men were in court but declined to comment on the DPP's decision.
At the time, questions were raised over whether gardaí took adequate measures to protect the safety of staff and customers in the shop.
Eugene Larkin, the owner of the Village Shop where the post office is based, said if gardaí had prior knowledge of the robbery, they should not have allowed the raiders enter the shop.
It is understood that at least one member of staff confirmed gardaí warned the raiders to drop their weapons before they opened fire.
