Dr Martin Mansergh elected to the Seanad

The Taoiseach's former advisor Dr Martin Mansergh has taken a seat on the Seanad Agricultural panel

The Taoiseach's former advisor Dr Martin Mansergh has taken a seat on the Seanad Agricultural panel. Dr Mansergh was elected on the 23rd count. Labour's Kathleen O'Meara and Francis O'Brien have also won seats on the Agricultural panel.

Counting of votes to elect six university senators began this morning. First results are expected late this evening.

Three senators are elected by the graduates of Trinity College and a further three by those from UCD, UCC, NUI Galway and NUI Maynooth.

Last night, Fianna Fáil's Paschal Mooney, Ms Ann Ormonde and Mr Labhrás Ó Murchú, as well as Fine Gael's Brian Hayes and Mr Noel Coonan were returned on the Cultural and Educational panel.

In all, there are 43 seats to be filled under the vocational panel system. Eleven senators will be nominated by the Taoiseach.

Counting will continue until Friday and the new Seanad should have its first meeting sometime in September.
