There has been "a disturbing increase" in the number of drink-driving offences in Cork city and surrounding towns this year, a senior garda in Cork city said yesterday.
Chief Supt Adrian Culligan said Garda statistics for the year to date show that the number of drivers caught over the limit in Cork city is up by about 20 per cent on last year.
"That is alarming because the message is not getting to the people out there." The statistics clearly showed that more people were being killed on the roads every year and something had to be done about it, he said. Chief Supt Culligan was speaking at the launch of the Garda's Christmas anti-drink driving campaign.
