Gardaí have appealed for the public's help in its investigation into the drowning of two brothers in Athlone, Co Westmeath at the weekend.

However, foul play is not suspected in the deaths of Daniel and Anthony Dowdall from Rathgarrett, Tyrrellspass in Co Westmeath.

It is understood the men were drinking outside Seán's bar, which backs onto the river Shannon at The Docks in the centre of Athlone on Friday night, when one of the men fell into the water.

Reports suggest that his brother attempted to rescue him, but failed because the men were struggling in between two boats.

There was no one available to comment on the issue at Seán's Bar last night.

A search for the two men was launched on Saturday morning by the Athlone Garda Sub-Aqua team.

At 11.40 am, the body of the 41- year-old man was taken from the river near Athlone Castle. The search for the second man, who was aged 39, continued, but his body was not recovered until yesterday morning.

It is understood that, while the Garda search was going on, the body was discovered accidentally by a local diving club during a training exercise.

The man's body was recovered at 11.30am close to where his brother's body was discovered.

Their bodies were taken to the Midlands Regional Hospital in Mullingar and postmortem examinations will be carried out this morning.

Supt Aidan Glacken at Athlone Garda station described the deaths as "a tragic accident".

"It is currently being investigated but we do not suspect foul play," he said.

A Garda spokesman appealed for help from anybody who may have seen the incident, or who was in the area at the time.

He said any information should be passed on to Athlone Garda station on 0906 492609.

This was the second drowning incident in the past week.

Last Monday, the body of Linda Crossan (28), from Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan, was found on a beach on the resort island of Ko Samui in Thailand.

Ms Crossan, who worked at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin, got into difficulties while swimming at a beach. Friends tried to rescue her but were unsuccessful.

Her funeral will take place after noon Mass in Saint Joseph's Church in Carrickmacross today.

It is believed that Fianna Fáil TD for Cavan-Monaghan and Ceann Comhairle, Dr Rory O'Hanlon, who is a family friend, assisted the Crossans in the return of Linda's remains through the Irish Consulate in Singapore. She was in Thailand on a six-week break.

She is survived by her father Patsy and brothers Jonathan, Donal, Declan and Noel.
