Drowning suspected in Kilkenny girl's death

It has been widely reported today that the death on Sunday morning of Kilkenny girl Ciara Gibbs (16) was due to drowning.

It has been widely reported today that the death on Sunday morning of Kilkenny girl Ciara Gibbs (16) was due to drowning.

Ciara was found dead in her home on Sunday morning by her father, Gerard, following his return from an overnight trip to Co Tipperary.

His wife, Lynn, was in a collapsed state in the house. She is understood to have been the first person to see the 16-year-old dead. Gardaí are keen to interview Lynn Gibbs, but have beeen unable to so far as she has been ill in hospital following the death of her daughter.

The family's house, protected by electronic gates and situated on a quiet rural road about 10 miles from Kilkenny city, remains under Garda protection and is being examined by members of the Garda Technical Bureau.

The inquiry has not been upgraded to a murder inquiry, however, indicating foul play is not suspected at this time.

Gardaí were last night contacting the parents of a number of classmates of the deceased girl that they wished to interview. They have not released the results of yesterday's postmortem beacause of "operational regions".
