Drug projects around the country are set to receive an increase in funding with the announcement of an extra €4 million for various projects.

Minister of State with responsibility for the National Drugs Strategy Noel Ahern said a further €2.27 million from the emerging needs fund will be allocated to projects in local drugs task force areas.

The Young People's Facilities and Services Fund will also see an extra €2 million for projects in Co Carlow and Co Waterford.

Of this allocation, €1.3 million will be used to purchase and equip a youth facility on Burrin Street in Carlow.

In Waterford, nearly €700,000 will be spent on a youth and community resource centre on the Outer Ring Road area of the city. The money will also be spent on new floodlights and improvements to the Children's Group Link in the city.

Speaking today, Mr Ahern said: "This allocation will bring the total commitment from the Young People's Facilities and Services Fund to almost €101 million since it was established in 1997."
