Drugs with a street value estimated at £1.8 million were found in Limerick city yesterday. The 179kg of cannabis resin was discovered in an apartment at Mount Kennet Place at 4.30 p.m. during a search by the Garda National Drugs Unit backed up by Limerick drugs squad.
A 39-year-old man is being held in Henry Street Garda station in connection with the finds. He was arrested under Section 2 of the Drugs Trafficking Act.
A Garda spokesman said it was part of an ongoing operation targeted at drug dealers in Limerick and the Munster region.
A Limerick truck driver is at present being held in Calais, France, after customs officers raided his vehicle, seizing cannabis believed to be bound for the Munster market. Two young Clare men were further remanded on bail at Limerick District Court this week after they were found with cannabis resin worth £370,000 at Roulagh, Ballina, Co Tipperary, on June 15th. Gardai also made a significant find near Kanturk in north Cork in an isolated area.
