The Garda has dismissed as "mere speculation" suggestions of a link between the murder of Ms Sophie Toscan du Plantier and a French man arrested in Britain last week.
Mr Jacques Girardin (39) was arrested near Oldham. He had lived intermittently in Ireland and France, and was the subject of an Interpol alert earlier this month as French police sought him in connection with three murders in Angers, France.
The Garda would not comment on suggestions that French and Irish officers might meet to discuss if Mr Girardin could have any connection with the killing of Ms Toscan du Plantier in Co Cork last December. However, Mr Girardin, who stayed in Sligo when in the Republic, was deported from the the Republic to France the month before her murder and is not thought to have returned. Gardai have indicated that they are satisfied with the progress of their investigation into the Toscan du Plantier murder. They have sent a file to the Director of Public Prosecutions on the case.
