Leeds United footballer Michael Duberry said he sought
the advice of club manager David O'Leary before deciding to tell a British court about team mate Jonathan Woodgate's part in a vicious attack on an sian.
But prosecutors said that after 2-1/2 days in the witness stand Duberry, who is charged with conspiracy to pervert the course of justice, was still not telling the whole truth.
Duberry, the last defendant to give evidence, said that although his first statement to police was a "fairytale", he had decided to come clean in court about what happened the night Najeib was beaten up in Leeds city centre.
Woodgate, 21, team mate Lee Bowyer, 24, and two other men are accused of battering Sarfraz Najeib unconscious in January 2000. They deny the charges and face jail if convicted.
