Dublin's four local authorities have begun distributing recycling boxes to private and local apartment blocks throughout the city and county.
The latest phase in the Dublin region's recycling programme will see about 40,000 apartments availing of a recycling service for newspapers, magazines, pizza and cereal boxes, tins and milk and juice cartons.
The recycling boxes will be available where local authority collections are still in force.
The collection service is in addition to the green bin collection service and the network of bring centres, recycling centres and glass banks throughout the region will remain in place. More than 20 per cent of household waste is now recycled.
According to the assistant city manager, Mr Matt Twomey, householders should prepare materials properly before putting them into their bin so that the maximum amount of materials can be recycled.
The four local authorities have set up a website where householders may find out where and how to dispose of waste. The address is www.dublinwaste.ie or individuals can contact a telephone information line during office hours, on 01-667 6880.
