Dublin Bus has opened an investigation into the death this morning of an elderly woman in an incident involving a double decker bus.

A Garda investigation is also under way into the incident, which happened shortly after 10am as the number 27 bus was leaving the bus stop at Barryscourt Road in Coolock, north Dublin.

The woman in her 70s was injured at the scene but died later at Beaumont hospital. She was the sixth person to die on the State's roads this year.

Elsewhere, gardaí are investigating a crash in Co Clare in which five people, including two small children, were injured.

The collision, believed to have involved a car and a people carrier, happened at around 11am on the Whitegate Road near Mount Shannon.

One child is understood to have sustained serious head injuries, while the other child and the three adults are believed to have suffered multiple fractures.

All five were taken to the Mid-West Regional Hospital in Limerick.

Gardaí have named the man killed in a road crash in Galway yesterday afternoon as Alan Gately (29), of Knockcroghery, Co Roscommon. He died when his car hit a ditch on the Ballyforan to Dysart Road shortly after 7.30am.
