WHEN A small group of concerned residents in Ard na Gréine first noted the increasing anti-social behaviour in the area some 35 years ago, they decided to do something about it.
A Neighbourhood Watch was the first step, while a football team, a parish committee and a social club all followed.
Funded by local residents, and energised by volunteers, the community now also boasts volunteers in all manner of areas, as well as an over-55s club; a ladies' club that meets weekly and organises social outings and holidays; a range of activities for young people in the area including scouts, girl guides, karate classes and a school garden; and volunteers working in a number of areas.
The aim of the community initiative is to create an environment where people will want to live and feel safe, with a strong sense of community and neighbourhood.
