Election candidates in the Dublin City Council area who have not removed their posters by Thursday face the risk of substantial fines.

Under the terms of an agreement reached with political parties in advance of the election campaign, the council will impose fines of €125 per day for each poster that remains up after the deadline. Posters for a range of candidates were still on display today.

This was the first election campaign where candidates had the option of paying a fee to get the council to take down their posters.

The cost was €300 for local election candidates and €3000 for European election candidates, and these fees had to be paid by June 4th. All posters removed by the council are being recycled.
