A number of units of the Dublin Fire Brigade are attending what is described as "a serious fire" in the city centre.

The fire is believed to have broken out in Huegenot House which is located just off St Stephen’s Green at the Baggot Street end.

The building is known to contain the offices of The Sunday Times newspaper.

A number of buildings adjacent to Huegenot House, including the Shelbourne Hotel, have been evacuated.

Earlier, it was feared that the blaze would spread after firemen were reportedly unable to control the fire.

However, a Garda spokesman told ireland.comtonight that the situation was now under control.

There are no reports of any injuries or anyone being trapped in the building but ambulance services are standing by.

A number of roads have been closed and traffic is being diverted.

A Dublin fire brigade spokesman said: “Twelve appliances have been called to the scene and 60 firefighters are involved in the operation.

“With that many officers at the scene this will be classed as a major blaze, although I believe it is now being brought under control.

“At this stage there are no reports of any casualties and we believe the building was fully cleared. “The building is mainly office space, although there are some apartments within it as well,” he said.
