The Department of Foreign Affairs has said it has offered consular assistance to the family of Ciarán Brown from Ballyfermot in Dublin.

He was on holiday with his wife Celine and son Eoin in Peurto del Carmen, the island’s main tourist town, and was swimming at the local beach when the accident happened on Saturday.

Sea conditions at the time were dangerous, according to local reports, and Mr Brown was pulled unconscious from the water. Emergency services attempted to resuscitate him but were unsuccessful.
