A Dublin woman has flown to Malaga in Spain for an inquest into the death of her 18-year-old daughter, killed in a jet-ski accident at the weekend.

Ms Sabrina Gannon, from Poplar Row, Ballybough, died in a Malaga hospital on Saturday evening. Earlier that day the jet-ski on which she was riding went out of control and crashed at the Costa del Sol resort of Torremolinos.

She was brought to the Hospital Clinico in Malaga but died shortly after she was admitted. A spokesman for the hospital said she had suffered massive internal injuries.

In Dublin last night, before leaving for Malaga, Ms Dolores Gannon said Sabrina, her second-youngest child, was on her first holiday abroad. "They told us she died of a punctured liver. She was on the fifth day of a two-week holiday and was with her boyfriend" and some friends, she said. "They were all having a smashing time."

She said Mr Christy Burke, the local Sinn Fein councillor, arranged for the group of friends to be brought back to Ireland. Sabrina was due to take an aptitude test for the Civil Service shortly after her return from Spain.The group of friends were staying at the 650-room self-catering Bajondillo apartments in Torremolinos. A spokesman from the apartment block said the complex was popular with Irish tourists.
