Eason has confirmed that the decision to withdraw the current issue of The Dubliner magazine from sale in its stores nationwide was taken after it received a high number of calls from concerned customers yesterday.

Martin Black, general manager of Eason, O'Connell Street, said the decision to pull the current issue of The Dubliner from the shelves was taken after Eason received a number of calls, one after another, yesterday asking Eason to consider taking the magazine off the shelves.

Customers complained that the article in question was in "very poor taste" and it was offensive to visitors from the United States.

Callers were also worried that the US media was taking more of an interest in the article than in Ireland's hosting of the Ryder Cup. Only the current issue of The Dubliner will be removed from sale.

"I sensed that there was genuine outrage among people that the wrong message was being sent out," Mr Black said.

Mr Black estimated that Eason, and the shops they distribute to, sell close to 2,000 copies of the magazine around the country each month.

The article in question referred to US Ryder Cup player Tiger Woods's wife. The Dubliner issued a full apology for the article on Wednesday, saying it had been intended to be satirical. A spokesperson for the magazine said last night that they had already requested that the magazine be removed from the shelves.
