German Finance Minister Mr Hans Eichel said todaythere was "no discussion" at present about when Mr Wim Duisenberg would step down as head of the European Central Bank.
"There is no discussion about Mr Duisenberg. He's doing a good job," Mr Eichel said in remarks to be published in the daily Sueddeutsche Zeitungtomorrow, but released in advance.
Mr Eichel said that the public speculation about whether Mr Duisenberg would step down before the end of his eight-year tenure was harming the euro.
