The Duke of Edinburgh has visited the North to present 50 young people participating in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme with their gold awards. The ceremony was held at the Northern Secretary's residence, Hillsborough Castle, and marked the 45th anniversary of the award scheme. The recipients undertook a broad range of activities, including expeditions to the Alps and the Wicklow Hills, spending time in a Romanian orphanage, a Kenyan dental hospital and a US housing project to qualify.
