Director of Dundalk Institute of Technology Dr Tom Collins is to resign. He has been director since February 2001.
Dr Collins has been appointed professor of education at NUI Maynooth. He will take up this appointment in the new year.
Chairman of the governing body Clifford Kelly said: "Tom Collins has had a profound impact on the academic and infrastructural development of the institute and has been a true visionary.
"He has left a lasting positive impression on all who come into contact with him. He will be a huge loss to Dundalk Institute of Technology and the whole region."
The governing body wished him success in his future career.
Dr Collins oversaw the growth of the institute, with new programmes being introduced in areas such as nursing and health, science, IT, music, business and engineering.
Student numbers have risen from 3,500 to 5,000 during his time as director.
Dr Collins has also presided over a €100-million investment programme, including the acquisition of the PJ Carroll's facility, the construction of the Whitaker library building, Faulkner student services building and the school of nursing, health and midwifery.
In addition to his post as director of the Dundalk institute, Dr Collins holds positions on the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland, the National Rural Water Monitoring Committee, and is currently chair of the Council of Directors of Institutes of Technology.
