Killarney Town Council has approved bylaws compelling jarvey horses to have dung-catcher devices attached on the public streets and roadways. In turn, the jarveys will be allowed to pick up fares in the town centre, under the draft new laws for 2010 unanimously approved last night.
The dung-catcher provision follows the decision by the Killarney National Park last year to ban the jarveys from entering the State-owned park unless the traditional carriages were equipped with the devices.
The town council move also follows a failed attempt by jarveys in the High Court to overturn the park’s prohibition. The bylaws are to go on public display for two months.
Meanwhile, all but a few of the 80 or so jarvey carriages now have dung-catchers attached.
