Dunne is accused of taking part in an armed robbery at a building society branch in Birmingham last May, during which a shot was fired. He is due to appear at a second remand hearing before Sutton Magistrates Court in the city today. Dunne (49) and another Dublin man, who is also charged with the offences, were arrested by West Midlands police.
Dunne was the Republic's most notorious heroin dealer during his heyday in the 1980s.
Dunne absconded during a 1983 trial for drugs possession and supply but was convicted in his absence. He was arrested in Portugal in 1985 and was brought back to Dublin to serve a 14-year sentence.
