While acknowledging that she was "not going to live forever", the Tánaiste, Ms Harney, last night reaffirmed her desire to remain as leader of the Progressive Democrats.
Speaking on the final programme TV3's The Dunphy Show, Ms Harney said she had no intention of quitting politics, which she described both as her job and her hobby.
In a wide-ranging interview, Ms Harney also said she believed that the question of whether Ireland was politically closer to Boston than Berlin was not simply a choice between the two.
While Ireland was closer spiritually to the US, and geographically to Europe, she said it found itself in an ideal position to act as a bridge between the two. The Tánaiste also warned the question of tax autonomy would prove to be a "red-letter issue" at the current EU summit.
Last night's two-hour long programme marked the end of The Dunphy Show, which was cancelled amid some controversy last week.
According to TV3, since the show was launched it had an average audience of over 300,000.
Speaking before the show, Mr Dunphy said he wished to thank TV3 for their support for the show.
"I was privileged to work with a brilliant team, all of whom I'm certain will go on to enjoy successful careers in the business. Like me, they have learned much from the experience working on the show."
